Get Five a Day in Fruit Nutrition

What do you reach for in the middle of the afternoon when the munchies begin to bite? For many of us, a midday snack consists of something sweet or salty. But how about something fresh and natural? Although many of us don’t think of fruit first when we begin craving something to eat, the fruit nutrition that is offered in that crispy apple or juicy orange is just what our body needs to make it through the day.

 
In fact, fruit nutrition is so important for healthy bodies, the United States Department of Agriculture recommends that we eat five to nine servings every single day.

Why Fruit?

There are many things that fruit nutrition offers to our bodies for better health. First, fruit is loaded with antioxidants. These substances help the body to fight the free radicals that our found in our environment like pollution and UV exposure. Free radicals can harm our bodies and cause them to age more quickly, but the antioxidants found in foods like fruit help to combat those negative effects. Another important piece of fruit nutrition is fiber, which can lead to a healthier digestive system. Consuming adequate fiber is a key component to reducing the risk of diseases like colon cancer as well.

There are other diseases that fruit nutrition can reduce the risk of. Heart disease, stroke, Alzheimer’s and cataracts may all be less likely when fruit is eaten every day. And since fruit is low on calories but big on taste, you will be better able to maintain a healthy weight as well. Since obesity is another contributor to illnesses, it is safe to assume that a diet that is rich in fruit can help to control weight and reduce the risk of conditions like diabetes also. Fruit nutrition can help to boost the immune system, making your body better able to fight off any viruses or infections that drift your way as well.

Don’t Forget

Believe it or not, fruit nutrition can also contribute to a more efficient memory. This means that if you are a student waking up to a big test tomorrow, eating a piece of fruit or two might help your performance on that test. Scientists are still trying to understand what the link is between fruit nutrition and enhanced brain function, but studies have shown a distinct connection between the two that warrants more research.

There are many good reasons to reach for that piece of fruit in the afternoons rather than a candy bar or bag of potato chips. So next time the munchies hit, why not satisfy your craving with a crunchy piece of fresh fruit? Your hunger will be satisfied and your body is sure to thank you in more ways than one!
