Food Facts--Nutrition Regulations Change Over Time

Everybody likes to be up to date on what the nutrition facts are for food at the current time. Knowing this information can allow you to make better choices in your diet. However, it can be difficult to keep up with this information because it is constantly changing, thanks to the new discoveries that nutrition experts make every day.

Scientific Discoveries Direct Change In Guidelines

The reason that the guidelines and facts about food and nutrition change so often is because scientists are constantly making new discoveries about what is healthy and what is not.

It is the job of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to update the guidelines for food and nutrition facts every five years in order to comply with these new discoveries. This way, the public can remain informed of what constitutes a healthy choice.

Recent Updates In Nutrition Knowledge

Most recently, there have been several changes made to the standard food and nutrition facts that have been common knowledge in the past. One of the biggest changes that has taken effect has been in the reorganization of the food pyramid. Another change is the way that the FDA has defined a “healthy diet.”

What is a healthy diet anyway? Though the definition has changed over the years, the FDA has recently composed a list of three basic elements. The first component is that a healthy eating plan should emphasize fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and milk products. The second guideline is that the diet should include lean meat, poultry, eggs, fish, beans, and nuts. Finally, the diet should limit saturated fats, trans fats, cholesterol, and sugars.

Another important guideline related to food and nutrition facts is that you should make sure that you are getting enough of the essential vitamins and minerals. These include vitamin A, vitamin C, calcium, iron, and fiber.

Counting Calories

Although experts used to recommend that every person consume 2,000 calories each day, this is no longer the case. Now, scientists are saying that the amount of calories you consume should depend on your weight, sex, and age. Some experts use Body Mass Index (BMI) as a way of determining caloric intake. Whatever the case, it is important to make sure you are consuming the proper amount of calories.

Feeling Fit

By staying aware of changes in food and nutrition fact guidelines, you will be able to ensure that you are living a healthy lifestyle. To find the information, visit the FDA’s website or purchase one of their publications.
